The tyres on your car can arguably be considered its most important safety feature. When driving, no matter what the speed or conditions the only contact between your car and the road are your tyres. But many of us still don’t check them regularly enough. Tyres should be inspected on a regular basis - ideally you should check your tyres every week for the correct pressure, tread depth, cuts, scrapes and bulges - all of which can contribute to a tyre failing and potentially causing a blow-out.
With tyres wearing due to a number of factors, it is recommended that you change them when the tread depth reaches 3.0mm. It is the tread depth that allows your tyres to grip in the wet by pushing the water out through the tread grooves. If it is not rapidly dispersed a sheet of water builds up between the tyre and the road causing it to lose all contact with the road surface and aquaplane. And although the legal minimum tread depth stands at 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyres width, research has shown that a car traveling at 50mph in wet conditions running on the legal limit of 1.6mm, took almost 8 metres further to stop than the same car with 3.0mm of tread. With 75,000 road accidents attributed to poor weather conditions each year, replacing your tyres when the tread reaches 3.0mm instead of 1.6mm could mean the difference between a fatal or non-fatal accident.
