Batteries are often one of the most neglected components in any car, yet a healthy, charged battery can save you from becoming stranded - battery failure is one of the most common reasons for calling out breakdown services. The battery is the heart of your cars engine, without a charged battery it doesn't matter how well maintained the rest of the car is, it still won't start. Your cars battery is responsible for supplying the power that causes the starter motor to spin in order to turn the engine over, it also supplies electricity to the fuel-injection/petrol pump and ignition system. But its job doesn't end there - your battery keeps on working even when your car is turned off, supplying electricity to components such as the engine management system, alarm, radio memory, and more.

Providing that it is in good condition, your cars alternator recharges the battery automatically when the engine is running, and although most modern batteries no longer require any regular maintenance other than keeping the connections clean and the fixing bolts tightened, batteries can fail. Eventually the internal condition degrades until it can no longer hold enough charge and needs replacing.
